Wand Shoot 2010

Members of Berkhamsted Bowmen braved the cold and rain to take part in the annual Wand Shoot of Abbey Bowmen held in St Albans. Wand shooting is a traditional English form of Archery, in which archers take turns shooting a vertical strip of wood around six feet high and three to six inches wide.

The Berkhamsted Bowmen representatives were shooting at a five inch wand from 120 yards, and bought back a number of medals for the club. Karen Freeman won gold in the Ladies' Logbow class, while Neil Baxter won Silver in the Gentlemen's event, and Matt Ross (pictured) and Steve Rushton both won Bronze medals. Berko's Bob Tucker also managed to hit the wand, and he and the club's medallists were presented with a green iced cake in recognition of the achievement.

All of the Archers

This month the club members celebrated their Diamond Anniversary Trophy Evening with a dinner and presentation at The Cricketers of Redbourn.

The club trophies are named after members past and present who have contributed to the tradition of archery in Berkhamsted. These include the Longman, Sir John Raven, the Dixon and the Emson trophies along with many more, which give archers plenty of opportunities to compete during the Year.

May / June 2010

We celebrated our 60th anniversary with a very special Paul Dunn Memorial shoot.

The victorious archers

Pictured here from left to right are: Bob Tucker (Chairman), Saffron Paine, Karen Freeman, Steve Rushton (who organised the whole event), Matt Ross (the Hooded Archer), David Lea, Elaine Rushton and Claire Fenlon along with two captured French knights...

The following report is taken from the Hemel Gazette on the 9th of June.

French knights and English hostages felt the wrath of more than 40 archers. Both sets of dummies were pelted with arrows at Berkhamsted Bowmen's 60th anniversary day which doubled as the Paul Dunn Memorial Fun Shoot last Monday.

The French Army

Points were awarded for wounding or killing the 'knights' and their 'king' and deducted for hitting hostages.

Archers from different local clubs donned medieval costume, picked up their longbows and got shooting.
Silver Arrow winner for highest score went to Berko Bowman Paul Stafford, who also won the Paul Dunn Memorial Trophy.

That award is in memory of longstanding club member Paul Dunn, who died in 2007. His widow Lyn gave out the prizes, which included the Junior Trophy, given to Adam Lea, highest scoring visitor to Helen Mawditt, and most arrows shot in a minute to Matt Ross and Neil Baxter, who let off 14 each. Best-dressed medieval archer was 11-year-old Saffron Paine, Julian Shipp won the Black Arrow for hitting most hostages while Jeanette Empson won the Lady Paramount prize.

A total of 200 pounds was raised for cancer charities on the day.
